Treatment Approach

My style of therapy is based on the understanding that our past experiences shape who we are and how we understand ourselves and the world around us in our current life. We use a thorough exploration of our past to get to know our behaviors, relationships, thoughts, and feelings. So much of our thinking and feeling happens out of our awareness (some call this the “unconscious”) and we use therapeutic techniques to help us better get to know what is “steering the ship.” Why am I feeling or acting this way? What has contributed to my patterns in relationships?

This style of therapy should feel like a conversation, where you are talking about 70% of the time and I am talking about 30%. I will ask questions to help you uncover important information, and will occasionally offer my understanding of what I am hearing. Through gaining this insight into ourselves, we can unlock ways of changing behavior, improving relational patters, and relieving troubling emotions or mood states.

Often, gaining self insight is enough for healing. Sometimes, we are left feeling a need for more. “Okay, what now?” I will often incorporate CBT, DBT, or acceptance-based strategies to provide concrete skills to supplement what you have discovered in therapy. This is incredibly powerful for behavioral change.
