Ummul-Kiram Kathawalla, Ph.D.

I am a licensed clinical psychologist providing individual and couples therapy to adults in Massachusetts and Minnesota. Since 2016, I’ve had the privilege of supporting clients through moments of transition, uncertainty, and growth. Much of my work focuses on anxiety, depression, trauma, identity and cultural concerns, perinatal and postpartum experiences, relationship challenges, and the complexities of parenting, work, and family life. I also help clients navigate career stress, academic pressures, sleep difficulties, and grief.

My therapeutic approach is warm, collaborative, and deeply rooted in understanding each client’s lived experience. I draw from evidence-based treatments (including CBT, ACT, mindfulness-based therapies, DBT-informed work, CPT, and Integrative Behavioral Couples Therapy),  but always with flexibility and intention. My goal is to meet you exactly where you are and to tailor our work together so it aligns with your values, strengths, and the pace that feels right to you.

I believe therapy is fundamentally relational. The connection we build becomes the foundation for change. Together, we’ll clarify what you want your life to look like, create an individualized plan to get there, and take steady, meaningful steps forward. My hope is to offer a space where you feel safe, supported, and understood — a place where you can slow down, breathe, and make sense of what you’re carrying. Clients often share that through our work they feel more grounded, less overwhelmed, and better able to show up in their lives with intention and clarity.

I earned my PhD in Counseling Psychology from the University of Minnesota. I completed my predoctoral internship at the VA Boston Healthcare System and my postdoctoral fellowship at the Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital in partnership with Boston University. My training has spanned trauma, identity development, health psychology, perinatal mental health, sleep interventions, and culturally responsive care. Alongside my practice, I serve as a Clinical Assistant Professor at Suffolk University, where I teach and supervise doctoral students.
